AKC News

As shows tentatively begin to take place again, the AKC (and most other trialing organizations) have issued guidance for safe participation and attendance. The AKC has a dedicated page on their website that includes best practices by sport, up to date cancellations, and other pertinent information.
They are also offering free breed webinars, which are open to judges and the general public, every day from 1:00-2:30 pm EST. If you are curious about conformation, a Conformation for Beginners class is also being offered free of charge.
The AKC is holding a Virtual Top Dog Challenge. You have to enter and submit a brief video through the associated portal on AKC’s website. Entries are open June 5th through 12th and winners will be announced June 17th-19th and cost $25. Videos must include a stack from the front, rear, and side, oral exam, gaiting, and free stack. A portion of the entry fee goes to Take the Lead.
As many of you already know, AKC also moved to allow Trick Dog and Rally Novice titles to be completed online. Competitors will need to set up one of five courses, video their run, and submit the video through YouTube (along with entry form and fees). The AKC will assign a Rally judge to score and qualifying scores are added to your dog’s record. As of now, this pilot program will end on December 31, 2020.
Just this week the Agility Course Test (ACT) program is also a virtual competition. It operates similarly to the Rally program with predesigned courses that must be completed within a time limit. These courses do require access to agility equipment but with two qualifying runs you can earn the ACT title.
2020 Rose City Classic

I love kicking the year off at one of my favorite shows on the west coast, the Rose City Classic! It’s in Portland, Oregon, typically the third week of January. This is a huge four day show with over 3,000 dogs and public attendance is very high. This show gets news time and featured on AKC.TV, as well as visited by children on their school field trips! It’s great to see the community come together for a show and for the dogs to be so nicely displayed for viewers.
This year we had a nice entry of some lovely Beaucerons from puppies to mature adults, both colors, and both ear styles were represented. We had multiple kennels, both domestic and foreign, represented. All the judges commented on their amazing temperaments, and how hard breeders have worked to improve the breed in the last 10 years!
Overall it is was a great weekend filled with Beaucerons, friends, and fun times! We hope to see everyone back next year and more Beaucerons competing in conformation, rally, and agility! I will be working hard to make this a supported entry for next year.

AKC Announces NOHS Levels of Achievement
At the AKC’s February BOD meeting the vote to approve the new National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) Levels of Achievement: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum passed. This adds another level of achievement to the competition, and is awarded with a certificate and pin. The full details can be found here. The launch date is expected to be July 1, 2020.

ABC & AKC Recognize the ATTS
On April 29, 2019 the ABC BOD voted to request the AKC to recognize the ATTS for Beaucerons. As of February 2020, that request has been approved, and as of April 2020 the title can be added to your dog’s AKC record.
The test is designed for the betterment of all breeds of dogs and takes into consideration each breed’s inherent tendencies.

If you have already completed the ATTS, you will have to pay the fee to the AKC to have the title added to the dog’s AKC record, and you will receive a certificate of title. If you take the test at any point going forward, you will still pay an additional fee to have AKC recognize the title, similar to the Do More With Your Dog trick titles, Dock Diving, or Barn Hunt.
The form can be found here but remember that it cannot be applied for until April! The AKC published additional information but note the ABC is not listed yet, but should be added in April to both the AKC and ATTS websites.

ABC’s First AKC Canine Ambassador
With the support and endoresement of the American Beauceron Club, member Victoria Paul is now an AKC Canine Ambassador. The AKC’s Canine Ambassador Program provides a link between the world of purebred dogs and children. Ambassadors are available to provide lessons and programming regarding the many facets of the purebred dog world, everything from grooming to showing and competition. Schools and other groups can search for an AKC ambassador by club or location to come and provide lessons on a variety of topics.
To become an Ambassador, you must complete an application and be a member in good standing with the breed’s parent club. The breed club’s President, Vice President, Treasurer, or Secretary must write a letter of support recommending you as an ambassador. Victoria says the application is fairly easy, but make sure you are comfortable speaking in front of people! Also, a breadth of experience and knowledge regarding the purebred dog world is helpful too. The AKC provides information and support for ambassadors once they have been approved, with everything from lesson plans to handouts, to how to get your program jumpstarted.
